Waterloo couple get married twice in one day

A BRIDE and groom had a double wedding celebration by getting married twice in one day.

Samantha Swift and her bridegroom Hinay Lad had a traditional Christian wedding followed by a Hindu ceremony.

The couple had a Nuptial Mass at St Thomas’ of Canterbury RC Church in Great George’s Road at 1.30pm followed by the Hindu ceremony at 4pm at Waterloo’s Old Christ Church.

Samantha, who grew up in Thornton and is a former pupil of Holy Family High School, met Hinay when they were both studying in Manchester. She was studying at Manchester Met College and Hinay at the University of Manchester.

They are both teachers of design and technology at Manchester schools.

It was another chapter in the history of Old Christ Church as it hosted its first Hindu wedding.

The Indian ceremony started on the Thursday with blessings at the Warrington home of Hinay’s parents, Haribhai and Vihna Lad. It resumed on the Saturday with the ceremonies in Waterloo.

More than 200 guests and well-wishers attended the ceremony at St Thomas’ Church and the mass was celebrated by Fr John Cullen.

The Hindu ceremony lasted more than two and half hours and was conducted by Dilip Trivedi.
