Chapter XII

Sai Leelas – Experience of (1) Kaka Mahajani – (2) Dhumal Pleader – (3) Mrs. Nimonkar – (4) Moolay Shastri – (5) A Doctor

Now let us see in this Chapter how devotees were received and treated by Baba.

Saints' Mission

We have seen before, that the purpose or object of Divine Incarnation is to protect the good and destory the wicked. But the mission of the Saints is quite different. To them the good and the wicked are the same. First they feel for the evil-doers and set them on the right path. They are like the Agasti to destroy the Bhava-sagar (the ocean of wordly existence) or like the Sun to the darkness of ignorance. The Lord (God) dwells in the Saints. In fact they are not different from Him. Our Sai is One of these, Who incarnated for the welfare of the devotees, Supreme in knowledge and surrounded with divine lustre, He loved all beings equally. He was unattached. Foes and friends, kings and paupers, were the same to Him. Hear His powers. For the sake of devotees, He spent His stock of merits and was ever alert to help them. But the devotees could never approach HIm, unless He meant to receive them. If their turn did not come, Baba did not remember them, and His Leelas could not reach their ears. Then, how could they think of seeing Him? some men desired to see Sai Baba's but they did not get any opportunity of taking His darshan, till His Mahasamadhi. There are many such persons, whose desire for Baba's darshan was not thus satisfied. If these persons, believing in Him, listen to His Leelas, their quest for milk (darshan) will be, to a great extent, satisfied by the butter-milk (Leelas). If some persons went there by sheer luck and took Baba's darshan, were they able to stay there longer? No. Nobody could go there of his own accord, and nobody culd stay there long even if he so wished. They could stay there, so long as Baba permitted them to stay, and had to leave the place when asked to do so by Baba; so everything depended of Baba's will.

Kala Mahajani

Once, Kaka Mahajani went to Shirdi from Bombay. He wanted to stay there for one week, and enjoy the Gokul-Ashtami festival. As soon as he took Baba's darshan, Baba asked him – "When are you returning home?" He was rather surprised at this question, but he had to given an answer. He said that he would go home when Baba ordered him to do so. Then Baba said – "Go to-morrow". Baba's word was law and had to be obeyed. Kaka Mahajani, therefore, left Shirdi, immediately. When he went to his office in Bombay, he found that his employer was anxiously waiting for him. His munim, i.e., the manager, suddenly fell ill, hence Kaka's presence was absolutely necessary. He had sent a letter to Kaka at Shirdi, which was redirected to him at Bombay.

Bhausaheb Dhumal

Now listen to an opposite story. Once Bhausaheb Dhumal, a pleader, was going to Niphad for a case. On the way he came to Shirdi, took Baba's darshan and wanted to proceed to Niphad immediately. But, Baba did not premit him to do so. He made him stay at Shirdi, for a week or more. In the meanwhile, the magistrate at Niphad suffered intensely from pain in his abdomen, and the case was adjourned. Mr. Dhumal was then allowed to go and attend to his case. It went on for some months and was tried by four magistrates. Ultimately Mr. Dhumal won the case, and his client was acquitted.

Mrs. Nimonkar

Mr. Nanasaheb Nimonkar, Watandar of Nomon and Honorary Magistrate, was staying at Shirdi with his wife. Mr. and Mrs. Nimonkar were spending most of their time in the Masjid with Baba and serving Him. It so happened, that their son fell ill at Belapur and the mother decided, with Baba's consent, to go to Belapur, and see her son and other relatives; and stay there for a few days, but Mr. Nanasaheb asked her to return the next day. The lady was in a fix and did not know what to do; but her God Sai came to her help. While leaving Shirdi she went to Baba, who was standing in front of Sathe's wada with Mr. Nanasaheb and others, and prostrated at His Feet and asked His permission to go. Baba said to her, "Go, go quickly, be calm and unperturbed. Stay comfortably at Belapur for four days. See all your relatives and then return to Shirdi." How opportune were Baba's words! Mr. Nanasaheb's proposal was overruled by Baba's decree.

Moolay Shastri of Nasik

An orthodox Agnihotri Brahmin of Nasik, by name moolay Shastri, who had studied the six Shastras and was well-versed in astrology and palmistry, once came to Shirdi to see Mr. Bapusaheb Booty, the famous millionarire of Nagpur. After seeing him, he and others went to see Baba in the Masjid. Baba bought various fruits and other things from vendors with His own money, and distributed them to the persons present in the Masjid. Baba used to press the mango on all sides so skilfully that when any person received it from Baba and sucked it, he got all the pulp at once in his mouth and could throw away the stone and the skin forthwith. Plantains were peeled off by Baba and the kernel was distributed to the devotees, while the skins were retained by Baba for Himself. Moolay Shastri, as a palmist, wanted to examine Baba's hand or plam and requested Him to extend the same. Baba ignored his request and gave four plantains to him. Then, they all returned to the Wada and Moolay Shastri bathed, wore sacred clothes, and started his routine duties, viz. Agnihotra etc. Then Baba as usual started for Lendi and said – "Take some Geru (i.e. a red miry substance, to dye clothes in saffron-colour), we shall today don saffron-coloured cloth. None understood what Baba meant. Then after some time when Baba returned, and preparations for the noon-Arati were being made. Bapusaheb Jog asked Moolay Shastri, whether he would accompany him for the Arti. He replied that he would see Baba in the afternoon. Very soon Baba sat on his seat, was worshipped by the devotees and Arti commenced. Then Baba said – "Get some Dakshina from the new (Nasik) Brahmin." Booty himself went to get the Dakshina; and when he gave Baba's message to Moolay Shastri, he was sorely perplexed. He thought in his mind thus: "I am a pure Agnihotri Brahmin, why should I pay Dakshina? Baba may be a great Saint. I am not His dependent." But as a great Saint like Sai Baba was asking for Dakshina through a millionaire like Booty, he could not refuse. So leaving his routine unfinished, he forthwith started with Booty to the Masjid. Thinking himself holy and sacred, and the Masjid otherwise, he remained at a distance, and joining his hands threw flowers at Baba. Then lo! all of a sudden, he saw no Baba on the seat, but saw his late Guru Gholap Swami there. He was wonder-struck. Could this be a dream? No, it was not, as he was wide awake; but though awake, how could his late Guru Gholap be there? He was speechless for some time. He pinched himself and thought again, but could not reconcile the fact of his late Guru Gholap being in the Masjid. Ultimately, leaving all doubt, he went up, fell at his Guru's feet and then getting up stood there with folded hands. Other people sang Baba's Arati, while Moolay Shastri chanted his Guru's name. Then casting off all pride of caste and ideas about sacredness, he fell flat at his Guru's feet and closed his eyes. When he got up and opened his eyes, he saw Baba asking for Dakshina. Seeing Baba's blissful form, and His inconceivable power, Moolay Shastri forgot himself. He was extremely pleased, his eyes were full of tears of joy. He again saluted Baba and gave the Dakshina. He said that his doubt was removed and that he saw his own Guru. On seeing his wonderful Leela of Baba all the people, including Moolay Shastri, were much moved, and they realized the meaning of Baba's words, "Bring Geru, we shall don saffron-coloured garment." Such is the wonderful Leela of Baba.

A Doctor

Once a Mamlatdar came to Shirdi with a doctor friend of his. The Doctor said that his Deity was Rama and that he would not bow before a Mahomedan, and so, he was unwilling to go to Shirdi. The Mamlatdar replied, that nobody would press him to make a bow, nor would ask him to do so. So he should come and give the pleasure of his company. Accordingly, they came to Shirdi, and went to the Masjid for Baba's darshan. All were wonder-struck to see the Doctor going ahead and saluting Baba. They asked him how he forgot his resolve and bowed before a Mussalman. Then the Doctor replied that he saw his beloved Deity, Rama, on the seat and he, therefore prostrated himself before Him. Then as he was saying this, he saw Sai Baba there again. Being dismayed, he said, "Is this a dream? How could He be a Mahomedan? He is a great Yogasampanna (full of Yoga) Avatar."

Next day, he made a vow and began to fast. He absented himself from the Masjid, resolving not to go there, until Baba blessed him. Three days passed and on the fourth day, a close friend of his from Khandesh, turned up, and with him, he went to the Masjid for Baba's darshan. After the salutation, Baba asked him, whether anybody had gone to call him, so that he had come. Hearing this vital question, the doctor was moved. The same night he was blessed by Baba, and he experienced the Bliss supreme, in his sleep. Then he left for his town, where the experienced the same state of a fortnight. Thus his devotion to Sai Baba increased manifold.

The moral of all the stories mentioned above, specially, that of Moolay Shastri, is this that we should have firm faith in our Guru and nowhere else.

More Leelas of Sai Baba will be described in the next Chapter.

Beware ! Your Little Angel is Watching to Give It Back

Beware ! Your Little Angel is Watching to Give It Back

" If lame, crippled, blind and diseased paupers come, they should be fed first." – Shri Sai Satcharitra, Ch. 38.

A frail old man went to live with his son, daughter-in-law, and four-year old grandson. The old man's hands trembled, his eyesight was blurred, and his step faltered. The family ate together at the table. However, the elderly grandfather's shaky hands and failing sight made eating difficult. Peas rolled off his spoon onto the floor. When he grasped the glass, milk spilled on the tablecloth. The son and daughter-in-law became irritated with the mess.

"We must do something about Grandfather," said the son. " I've had enough of his spilled milk, noisy eating, and food on the floor." Therefore, the husband and wife set a small table in the corner. There, Grandfather ate alone while the rest of the family enjoyed dinner. Since Grandfather had broken a dish or two, his food was served in a wooden bowl. When the family glanced in Grandfather's direction, sometimes he had a tear in his eye as he sat alone. Still, the only words the couple had for him were sharp admonitions when he dropped a fork or spilled food. The four-year-old watched it all in silence.

One evening before supper, the father noticed his son playing with wood scraps on the floor. He asked the child sweetly, "What are you making?" Just as sweetly, the boy responded, "Oh, I am making a little bowl for you and Mama to eat your food in, when I grow up." The four-year-old smiled and went back to work. The parents were speechless. Then tears started to stream down their cheeks. Though no word was spoken, both knew what must be done.

That evening, the husband took Grandfather's hand and gently led him back to the family table. For the remainder of his days, he ate every meal with the family. Moreover, for some reason, neither husband nor wife seemed to care any longer when a fork was dropped, milk spilled, or the tablecloth became soiled.

Children are remarkably perceptive. Their eyes observe, ears listen, and minds process the messages they absorb. If they see us patiently provide a happy home atmosphere for family members, they will imitate that attitude for the rest of their lives.

The wise parent realizes that every day the building blocks are being laid for the child's future. Therefore, let's be wise builders and role models!

If the mind is thus concentrated, the Goal is achieved

If the mind is thus concentrated, the Goal is achieved

Baba : Our art is unique. Remember this. To get Atmajnan, dhyana is needed i.e., the Atma-anushtana that pacifies and carries the mind into Samadhi. So give up all desires and dwell in your mind upon God in all. If the mind is thus concentrated, the Goal is achieved.

For Dhyana, meditate on me either as in form or as formless, mere Ananda. If such formless contemplation is hard, then think of my form, just as you see it here. Think of it night and day.

With such meditation, the mind dissolves into unity (i.e., attains Laya). The difference between subject, and object, (me and you) and the act of contemplation will be lost. This results in Chaitanya Ghanata, Brahma Samarasata. The Guru's glance is bread and milk for the pupil.

Baba saved the little son of Shri S. B. Nachane from fire accident.

Baba saved the little son of Shri S. B. Nachane from fire accident.

Shri S. B. Nachane's little son of about nine months named Harihar alias Sainath was playing with his brothers and sisters. Other grown up children have been firing crackers nearly igniting coloured matches. One of them threw burning match's on the child's clothes. Sainath's clothes caught fire, but the little boy could not understand the risk this involved. The mother was busy doing something outside there, but her mind was away from her children. So Baba at once appeared before her in the form of a Fakir and pointing to the burning child said "Look there, see what is going on there". Thereupon the mother at once ran up to the child removed the burning clothes in proper time. After Harihar was thus saved the mother looked for the Fakir but during the confusion that followed on the running of the mother to the child, He disappeared altogether no one knew where. The devout parents of Harihar rightly attributed this to Shri Sai Baba's grace and prayed for such anxious care of them whenever so required. Dear readers please think over how Baba is safeguarding the devotee's welfare.

Surrender Shri Sai Completely ! Stupendous Delectation and Deliverance be there!!

Yes I Did Come To You

Kaka Dixit was a perfect disciple of Baba. He not only obeyed Baba's orders, but also tried to inculcate Baba's nature and lifestyle, so that one day he could be just like his Sadguru. Indeed, he succeeded with hard work.

One evening, Kaka was returning home from his office. A strong able-bodied person came and asked for alms. Kaka however looked at His face keenly and was convinced that He was none other than his Sadguru. He at once gave Him some coins. The man on receiving the money just laughed and went away without asking for anything from any other person. Dixit watched Him till he disappeared. Dixit started for Shirdi on that very day. When he met Baba, he enquired about it. Baba simply said, "Yes! I did come to you in that form."

Dixit was extremely pleased to hear this.

POWER OF GURU

POWER OF GURU

(From the glorious life of Saint Damaji of Mangalveda as narrated by Mr. Venkatesan)

That the Lord is servant of the devotee and His wages are mere devotion and steadfast meditation on Him alone as the sole Refuge, is well exemplified in the story of the illustrious saint of Mangalveda, is in Maharashtra and Damaji even from his younger days had developed a spirit of surrender to the Lord. His intelligence and popularity attracted the notice of the ruler of the province who appointed him as the Revenue Collector of Mangalveda.

Once a great famine raged over the entire locality. Rains failed and there was a great dearth of food grains. Starvation and disease exacted a heavy toll among the population and people flocked to Damaji for help. Damaji wanted to relieve them of their distress and ordered the entire royal- granaries to be opened and the grains distributed among people.

But envious minds began to chafe at Damaji's added glory. They sent petitions to the ruler that he had laid bare the entire granaries belonging to the state. Damaji was summoned to the Durbar for an answer. Nothing daunted Damaji and he followed the emissaries. Pandarapur was on the way and Damaji    felt that he should have a bath in the sacred Chanrabagha and offer his worship to Lord Vittal. "Oh Lord, it was you who made Damaji distribute the grain among your starving children, and again it is You that is taking me for an explanation at the Durbar. Your ways are indeed mysterious. What need for fear have I, as I know it is You in everyone who is playing this Drama? I have little care for this body for it is Thy and at Thy service."

In the meantime at the palace of the ruler, there appeared a Talayari and presented his credentials to the ruler as the servant of Damaji, and told him that his master had submitted the value of the grain that he was accused to having misused. The Talayari's appearance overwhelmed the ruler and he was thrilled. The amount of four lakhs of rupees which was the value of the grain so utilized by Damaji was promptly paid and a regular receipt taken. Immediately orders were passed withdrawing all proceedings against Damaji and he was honorably acquitted.

Here at Pandarapur, Damaji after worship began to read 'Bhagavadgita' as usual. On opening the sacred book he found in it a receipt for four lakhs and an order withdrawing the proceedings and a direction that he would be received in the palace with all honor. Damaji could not believe his eyes. The Lord's ways are certainly inexplicable.

The Ruler fell at Damaji's feet and begged for forgiveness for the great hardship he had caused him. Damaji discovered that it was the Lord who had thus saved His devotee and decided to spend the reminder of his life devoted to the Lord at Pandarpur.

GURUVAAR PRARTHNA

GURUVAAR   PRARTHNA

Our Beloved Sadguru Sainath, please accept our humble prayers on this Holy Day of Guruvaar. Baba, there are many unfinished tasks that we had started off enthusiastically. Please make sure we don't fail and lapse in our effort for any task on hand. Baba, don't allow boredom or any distraction to shun us off in a different direction altogether. Please guide us to prioritize and then invest our effort accordingly. Strengthen our resolve to finish what we got up for and enjoy the experience of satisfaction and goodness. On this holy day we start our prayers by reading your divine guidance in Shri Sai Samartha Satcharitra.

One who can concentrate and whose mind is composed only can reach the supreme state of salvation and all others tire out on the way.

He will not be satisfied whose mind is restless. He has no entry in the realm of the supreme state of salvation and thus cannot avoid the cycle of birth and death.

Such is that supreme state but when can one find it? When all the doubts of the mind are cleared, it then appears before you on its own.

Here logic, deductions, popular talk or discussions are of no avail. Only by God's grace you can attain it. All other sciences of learning are futile.

This is the marvel in this case – that innocent belief succeeds in knowing it, while logical skills are futile and the logical mind is confused.

Those who acquire the perfect wisdom are of a different type, whose thinking and intelligence are of a different kind. Please understand that such a person who has the real knowledge is very different and he is the best person to impart knowledge.

How the precious body is wasted! Wealth and pleasures are like the afternoon shadows, short-lived. Understand that this is a powerful illusion created by God and surrender at the feet of the Saints.

Saints are like the vessel on the oceans of the world. You be one of the passengers. Who else is capable of taking you across to the yonder shore?

Self-control and detachment, if combined together, will take him across the worldly ocean without difficulty, even though he may be a dullard like a millstone.

Assurance of Protection from Shirdi Sai Baba:

Baba gave the following doctrines to us. This is very clear and open message to all of us. Let us read once again and keep them in our mind before staring our prayers.

Why should any fear?  When I am here?

I will not allow my devotees to come to harm. I have to take thought for my devotees. And if a devotee is about to fall, I stretch out my hands, and thus outstretched hands at time to support him, I will not let him fall.

See I have to suffer for your sake, to remove your sufferings.

My treasury is open. None brings carts to take from it. I say dig; none will take any pains. I said dig out the treasure and cart it away. Be the real and true sons of the mother and fully stock your magazine. What is to become of us i.e. this body life? Earth will return to the earth; and the air (breath) will return to the air. This opportunity will not return.

I shall draw out My devotees from the jaws of Death.

Be wherever you like, do whatever you choose, remember this well that all what you do is known to Me

I am the Controller - the wirepuller of the show of this Universe.

Nothing will harm him, who turns his attention towards Me

Stay, cast off your anxiety, your sufferings have come to an end. However, oppressed and troubled one may be as soon as he steps into the Masjid, he is on the pathway to happiness.

If you spread your palms with devotion before Me, I am immediately with you, day and night.

Let anybody speak hundreds of things against you, do not resent by giving any bitter reply

God is the sole Proprietor, nobody else is our Protector. His method of work is extra-ordinary, invaluable, and inscrutable. His will will be done and He will show us the way, and satisfy our heart's desires.

We should mean well and do well. Whatever is destined to happen, will happen".

Place your entire faith in my words. Your object will be accomplished
