Your Breath Can Change Your Life

Five minutes of pranayama is enough for all-round wellbeing, writes yoga teacher CARRMINE IREENE

Breathing is the most important biological function. On an average, a person takes 15 breaths per minute, making it 900 breaths in an hour and 21,600 breaths in 24 hours. In every conscious breath, we touch the higher power of the Self to reach the sheath of the soul.

Way To The Soul

Yogic breathing consists of four parts — pooraka or inhalation, abhyantara kumbhaka or retention of the inhaled breath, rechaka or disciplined complete exhalation and bhayakumbhaka or retention after exhalation.

In pranayama, the sadhaka uses the body as a sacrificial altar. Inhalation is like pouring ghee on the altar, exhalation is the flame blazing out from the yajnakunda.

Retention is in the form of mantra, an offering so that the Self merges and dissolves in the Universal Soul or Paramatma.

Below the navel is a great nerve centre which stores the extra prana and this is the hawankhunda of the body where incineration takes place.

When you breathe through the left nostril you are awakening the human consciousness and breath drawn in through the right nostril awakens divine consciousness. When the breath is held either inside or outside the body it embraces shakti to enlighten the mind and attain spiritual bliss.

As you ascend in inhalation the sound resembles 'so' and in descending exhalation, the sound resembles 'hum'. This is the 'sohum mantra' that we repeat unknowingly throughout life. To be aware of this mantra and the breath that we keep taking is the first step towards pranayama that takes us to the soul's doorstep.

The Divine Path

With every passing thought, our energy gets consumed, depleting our prana and creating ambush on our path. Breath is the messenger of the body. Every action of life comes from kama or desire that is creative energy which leads us to moha or attachment. If kama is not handled well, it can turn to madha or arrogance and krodha or anger. The highest and purest form of desire is karuna or compassion. When you inhale and hold the breath within your body, compassion is awakened and there is a renewal and reversal of arrogance. Greed is destructive and gives rise to ahamkara or ego which paves the path of insecurity and jealousy and nibbles prana away. As you start inhaling through the opposite nostril, the manipulative ego gets anchored with the Self and there is no room for greed and undesirable emotions. The belly is the meeting point of matter and soul and bhayakumbhaka is its apex.

Breath Control

In part one, you inhale through your right nostril, blocking the left nostril with the little finger of your right hand. In part two, you hold the breath inside the body, closing the right nostril with the thumb. In part three, you exhale through the left nostril, releasing the little finger while the right nostril is closed. In part four, you hold the breath outside after a complete exhalation. Repeat the round by inhaling now through the left nostril in part one and proceed to complete the cycle as before.

Benefits Of Pranayama

1. Pranayama frees the mind from any clutter that is obstructing soul growth
2. Helps memory and concentration and improves focus and balance
3. Tackles the problem of insomnia and anger, bringing peace and calm
4. Improves the health of the heart, lungs, brain and the digestive system
5. Corrects the metabolic rate to overcome obesity and helps in weightloss
6. Builds up immunity and helps you fight infections and diseases
7. Purifies the aura and alleviates energy loss

Five to 15 minutes of pranayama can bring about a dramatic change in your physical, emotional, psychological and spiritual well-being.

How to become fearless

It is important to understand that the air never gets depleted from the universe no matter how much is consumed. We are floating in a pool.

Natural law is that what one may absorb, others may not be absorbing it. For example: A leaf takes green colour, the flower is not absorbing it....it is taking another colour.

If someone absorbs fear, he is making someone else fearless.  That individual is creating that field, atmosphere around by being receptive to it.....

Don't take fear. An environment of fear is self-created...  enhancing the devil by feeling fearful of him. By being fearful, someone else is becoming fearless. This is how terrorists work!

Each one is poorn. The Supreme has made everyone a reflection of itself.... Be fearless and counter attack. Now we have to be fearless, aware and conscious. This is the message.

Understand the subtleties. Everything is floating in the universe. Universe balances all. Same sun rays fall on the cactus as on the flower, what they do not absorb, shows on them.

Doubts and fear come when you are fearful, karmheen.

Face your fears... counteract by saying: "Why should I be scared when I am truly working on my self?" People often become submissive. Say to yourself: "I am in surrender if I am truthful  then divine help will always be there for me" Energy is depleted by being fearful. Forward your fears to the Universe. "I am on path of truth love karm and light, I am not taking it."

Watch the body language change. Grace will descend.....Be a worthy medium of divine grace.

Pranam

Karm is dharm.......Love never fails.....Truth always conquers

Waiting For A Better Tomorrow

I happened to meet a young lady who was working in a company based in Delhi. She complained that the terms and conditions at work were not very good and that she was, as a result, suffering from stress. I asked her if she wanted a formula for de-stressing and since she seemed interested, I gave her a spiritual formula that was given by the Prophet of Islam. The Prophet said, "Waiting for a better tomorrow is also a form of worship."

A few months later I happened to meet the same young lady again. This time she was happy. During our conversation, she said, "Now, I have got a job in another company which is better in every respect." This is not an isolated instance. I have tried this formula several hundred times during my own life and on each occasion, I have found it to be the best in dealing with such situations.

This formula has nothing mysterious about it. It is based on the well-established laws of nature. When you face some unwanted situation and you become negative, then you are bound to suffer some deprivation. Due to your negativity, you will hinder your intellectual development and you will become discontented with your job. You may even start underperforming and become unwanted, This shortcoming in your performance will lead to negative result in your life.

However, if you adopt the above formula, you will become stress-free and full of hope. This will make thinking positively a habit. A positive nature will surely enhance your skills and make you a more sought-after resource.

The above formula is not a religious one. It is based on human psychology. If your mindset turns negative, you diminishes your abilities. But if you work hard with a positive mindset, you improve your abilities. This is a law of nature, and is irreversible.

It is an accepted fact that training enhances the scope for an individual, but training is not confined to professional institutions. There is another institution of training and that is one's own mind. Positive thinking is a natural form of intellectual training. This training institution is continuously at work and progressively makes you acquire a better personality. This is a miracle of nature and each one of us has it in his control. Everyone can have this experience.

This aspect of the mind is a great gift from nature. When we shun negativity and adopt the way of positive thinking, we initiate a process in our mind – a process of enhancement of our personality. Positivity helps to unfold our potential. As a result of this process, a positive thinker improves his prospects in life. On the contrary, negative thinking is most injurious to the process of personality development. Only positive thinking can be truly helpful in this process.

Our world is governed by well-known natural laws. The only way to progress is to discover these laws and follow them. Almost all cases of failure can be explained by people failing to follow laws of nature. Following this course is like travelling along a highway which will lead you straight to your destination. If, instead, you allow your vehicle to stray from this path, it will be difficult for you to reach your destination.

The Creator is Himself a positive mind. He loves positivity. He loves those who follow the positive way of life. Develop positive thinking as it will enhance your personality. Consequently, you will experience success.

10 things you should know about your Mr. Right

Marriage can be a tough nut to crack! And looking for Mr Right is a bigger one to deal with, don't you think? In a world where almost everything seems bleak and uncertain, knowing you have found someone to spend the rest of your life with is surely a breath of fresh air. But how do you reach a plausible conclusion while searching for that man? Here are 10 things you should know about him before you take the plunge!

Affectionate: Sometimes it is plain difficult to find out if your man is affectionate or not. The point is, if he cares for you and your feelings, he's surely a loving and warm person.  Little things like dropping you home after a dinner date or calling to check if you ate your lunch are simple gestures that prove your man is affectionate.

Good listener: In a relationship, it is important to communicate not just your feelings but also your simple desires. If your man spares a minute to hear you out, then he surely deserves to stay. A good listener is likely to acknowledge that he cares and is sensitive about your issues.

Respects women: If the man you have fallen for does not respect the lovely women in his life, then he is no good. It can be anyone – his mother, a distant friend or even a colleague! In fact, love and respect go hand in hand. It is unlikely that your man loves you if he doesn't respect you for being the woman you are!

Good humour: A little humour goes a long way in finding happiness and mutual contentment in a relationship. Most women prefer their men to possess a good sense of humour and also the ability to laugh at jokes once in a while. Being serious is one thing and looking at the brighter side of life is another.

Respect family: A few things here go without saying! For example a woman would want her man to respect his parents. Having said that your soulmate will respect the most special people in your life only if he values and treasures his own. A man, who cannot respect his family, is incapable of treasuring relationships in the long run.

Dependable: If your man is called Mr Dependable by his friends, then you can relax and be happy about it. A woman will go for a man who is responsible and gives her a reason to rely on him. Simple gestures like taking out time to finish some chores over the weekend or even helping you fix dinner shows he is dependable.

Good dresser: Who doesn't want a smart, confident and well-dressed man? Most women wish to see their men in fine clothes and most importantly, clean shoes. Also factor in that smart dressing makes a huge impact to one's sex appeal. And sure we love to flaunt our men!

Security: All of us wish to be with someone who can provide security – be it emotional or financial. Most women breathe a sigh of relief when they discover their man is capable of taking good care of them.

Friends: Your man is a happy one if he hangs out with his band of boys once in a while. Bonding with friends is an important activity and it shouldn't be just for company sake. Sometimes men are comfortable discussing certain things only amongst friends. Make sure he treasures them for life!

Hobbies: We all love to indulge in some kind of fun activity at some point in life. Be it reading, music or simply watching films. If your man loves to cook, then you cannot get luckier! And if he loves to play some kind of sport, then it only proves he enjoys being a man. Point is, keeping a hobby lets one admire the finer things in life apart from a well-paying job!

How to Avoid the Break-up Bug

We were a little surprised when we came across this  — but a new study suggests that if a couple in your social circle breaks up, the odds of you splitting up with your partner increase by 75 per cent! Believe it or not, just like you are bound to spread the symptoms of a flu when you get one, this holds true for social behavior too. So like smoking and drinking, breaking up with your lover is also contagious and could spread and become a threat to the other people in your life.

This statement may sound like a hyperbole and not logical to many of you, but there might just be some truth to the break-up domino effect. If your close friend, sibling or office colleague is going through a rough patch in their relationship or having a seperation, sub-consciously, you might emulate them. If things around you are crumbling and falling apart, don't you think there is a probability that it might affect your life a wee bit too?

When asked about this strange phenomenon, relationship expert Seema Hingorrany said, "It's a good study, but it doesn't always hold true. People who get affected by other people's break-ups are usually very vulnerable and sensitive. It's like the herd syndrome, where you follow things without realising it. I recently had a case, where a client told me that she had a friend who constantly fought with her boyfriend. Since she was exposed to her friend's situation, even she started having the same arguments with her own boyfriend." No matter how careful you are when it comes to protecting your relationship, if you face situations like these, chances are, you will start behaving in a particular manner. This can eventually lead to a break-up.

Sometimes when you have somebody very close to you going through a situation in their lives — whether good or bad — it will make you introspect. While no one is naïve or silly enough to have a break-up just because their best friend is having one, it is bound to make them wonder if they are going on the right path, and if the relationship is worth it. And for some of us, it may take away the taboo of something that might have seemed alien a while before!

DON'T LET OTHERS THREATEN YOUR RELATIONSHIP

>    One man's medicine is another man's poison. So don't follow the other person's actions blindly or imitate them. What may be the solution for him/her, may not be the right action in your case.

>    At times like these, you need to make a conscious effort to keep yourself and your relationship away from negativity. Remind yourself of the positive aspects of your relationship.

>    Seize the opportunity and evaluate your relationship in a constructive manner. What's working well? What are your relationship's strengths and weaknesses? Make this the time to take out whatever issues you've swept under the rug and solve them.

>    Communication is very important with your partner. If you have doubt or issues troubling you, address them then and there. You don't want them snowballing into something bigger later.

>    Every relationship has a protocol, rules that two people follow. They differ from people to people. So don't compare your relationship with your friend's. Have your own identity.
